Artist Spotlight: Hideki Naganuma

Where to begin? Hideki “Funky Uncle” Naganuma is a name familiar to video game music listeners, lovers, and creators. Mostly known for the Jet Set Radio series. With a new game on the horizon, without a doubt his creative spark continues to thrive.

Hideki’s origins began with Sega, working on the soundtrack for Jet Set Radio, and Jet Set Radio Future. Within the game, the music would mix like a live dj (btw Hideki is also a DJ in his other life) at an event or club. Comprised of his own original songs, and well known artists would compile into one playlist, changing throughout each stage.

Plus he worked on music for various arcade games, like Ollie King, Soccer sim, Sega Rally, Kurohyo (part of the Yakuza series) and more. Not only known for just game soundtracks alone, but also anime as Skankfunk for the series Air Gear, Gintama and other titles.

Sonic Rush, and Sonic Generations brought the hype with the Blue Blur. Taking on a more soulful, action packed vibe. Plus working with other artists, to create a mix featuring key songs from the in game soundtrack as well.

Hover: Revolt of Gamers, as a supervising producer, and creating two key tracks. With the soundtrack connecting to JSR. Plus also released songs for Lethal League, and War of Brains.

Persona 3D and 5D as lead producer, sound design, and arranger. A rhythm dancing game comprised of key songs within the Persona series, but done in a funky, groovy vibe.

Which leads to his recent work on the title Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. A spiritual successor to Jet Set Radio after 20+ years.

The Funky Uncle, a legend, and an awesome gentleman throughout the game music world. When music connects to your heart, and soul just go with the vibe.

As a long time fan of his work, Jet Set Radio raised the bar on what video game music was capable of, connecting to its listeners, a vibe, and soul. There have been numerous titles that explored the club, and trance scene, but JSR was unique, as it was telling a story about a mission, art, expression, and being yourself against the noise going on outside.

After Jet Set Radio Future, it has been so long since there was another title like it. From what the Funky Uncle delivered in both games, and now BRC. No telling what is next for the legend. The beat keeps on going
