Meet Z MARUYAMA: WOMB Tokyo’s New Underground Club
If you know Tokyo’s electronic music scene, you’ve probably heard of WOMB.
For more than two decades, WOMB has been an important part of Tokyo’s club culture. On December 5, 2025, WOMB opened Z MARUYAMA in Shibuya, just a short walk from the original club. Rather than creating another large-scale venue, WOMB took a more intimate approach with its new space.
Z MARUYAMA is a compact underground club designed around a high-quality sound system, lighting and, most importantly, the dancefloor. It was created with a clear purpose: to give people a place where they can become fully immersed in electronic music and simply dance.
That distinction is important. Z MARUYAMA isn’t designed as a DJ bar or a listening bar where music sits in the background. The focus is on experiencing the music physically – standing on the dancefloor, feeling the sound and sharing the moment with the people around you.
Located in the heart of Shibuya’s Maruyamacho district, Z MARUYAMA offers a different perspective on Tokyo nightlife. It carries the experience and musical culture that WOMB has developed over the years, but presents it in a smaller and more intimate environment.

The venue’s programme focuses heavily on Techno and House, bringing together DJs who are actively involved in Tokyo’s electronic music scene. Many of the artists appearing at Z MARUYAMA regularly perform at different venues across the city, making the club a place where visitors can encounter DJs who are deeply connected to Tokyo’s current underground scene.

Finding Z MARUYAMA
One of the first things to know before visiting: don’t expect a huge club entrance.
Z MARUYAMA is located in Maruyamacho, just a few minutes’ walk from WOMB. The venue is on the first floor of the Dr. Jeekahn’s building.
The entrance itself is relatively understated rather than flashy, so it may not immediately look like a typical club entrance. Lockers are also available near the entrance, making it convenient to leave your belongings before heading onto the dancefloor.
Tips for First-Time Visitors
Tip 1 – Coming from WOMB
If you’re walking over from WOMB, look for the entrance beside Harlem & ATOM. There isn’t a huge, brightly lit club sign, so it can be easy to miss on your first visit. Checking the map beforehand can save you some time.

The Space
Z MARUYAMA keeps things deliberately compact.
The main area is centred around a dedicated dancefloor, with the bar positioned within the same space. Rather than separating the audience from the DJ or creating multiple rooms, the layout keeps the experience focused on the music and the people on the floor.
There is also a small table area located just behind the dancefloor. These tables can be reserved as Premium Tables, offering a place to sit, enjoy drinks and still remain close to the energy of the dancefloor. This makes the space flexible: you can spend the night dancing, take a break at the table, or move between the two depending on the atmosphere of the night.
The layout may also change depending on the event, but the basic concept remains the same — a compact club where the distance between the DJ, the dancefloor and the crowd feels much closer.
And that intimacy is really the point.
Z MARUYAMA does not try to compete with WOMB by being bigger. Instead, it offers something different: a closer, more direct way to experience Tokyo’s electronic music scene.
