American EDM duo, Louis the Child, shut down D.C.’s Union Market district this past Saturday with a free block party, culminating in an electric set.
The group has been capering around the East Coast, delighting audiences with unique venues and mesmerizing sets. Before their D.C. stop, they took advantage of one of nature’s best theatres by hosting a 4-hour show in the caverns of Pelham, Tennessee. Their D.C. stop followed suit by taking over one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, producing a cityscape backdrop that embraced grit and the beauty of daily life in a city fraught with challenges.
Organized by Nü Androids, the event couldn’t have come at a better time for the city. With the government shutdown serving as a pervasive influence, the mood is bleak. Louis the Child provided a glimmer of light amid the stormy skies that are currently engulfing the nation’s capital.
The day began with a community-led event, highlighting the best of D.C.. Local DJs, including Mark Azar and Mathais. took the stage before the headliners, carrying on Nü Androids’ mission of promoting local talent when the big names are in town.
When the main act took the stage, the party continued with the duo’s energy and happiness infecting the crowd. Louis the Child’s brand of feel-good electronic pop proved to be a necessary balm. Every drop was cushioned by a euphoric rise that kept spirits high despite the raindrops that had begun to fall. As it sometimes happens, the rain served as a cleansing factor rather than a dampening one. Everyone on the street was letting the stench that had clung to our skin since the shutdown, finally wash down the street sewers.
The duo delivered a standout show, rejuvenating the district and reminding us why music and community are so important.
